Opening Evening Prayer…
Guided Prayers
A short prayer to end the day — a psalm, a brief reading, intercessions, the Our Father, and a commendation of the night to God. There is one for each day of the week.
Opening
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
We hand this first day of the work week back to God, and rest.
Psalm
Psalm 4:2–9 · NABRE
Answer me when I call, my saving God. When troubles hem me in, set me free; take pity on me, hear my prayer.
How long, O people, will you be hard of heart? Why do you love what is worthless, chase after lies? Selah
Know that the LORD works wonders for his faithful one; the LORD hears when I call out to him.
Tremble and sin no more; weep bitterly within your hearts, wail upon your beds,
Offer fitting sacrifices and trust in the LORD.
Many say, “May we see better times! LORD, show us the light of your face!” Selah
But you have given my heart more joy than they have when grain and wine abound.
In peace I will lie down and fall asleep, for you alone, LORD, make me secure.
Reading
1 Peter 5:8–9 · NABRE
Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for [someone] to devour. Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings.
Intercessions
For forgiveness for today’s impatience and sharp words: wash the day clean.
For those still working tonight — in hospitals, on roads, in quiet offices: keep them safe.
For our home and all in it: let this be a place of peace tonight.
For sleep, without the day’s worries following us into it.
Lord, hear our prayer.
The Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Into the Night
Lord, I place this day — all of it — into your hands. Watch over everyone I love through the night, and wake me ready to praise you. Amen.
Tomorrow evening, the next day's prayer will be here. Back to Pray.
