Ignatian Contemplation

Gospel Scenes

This is Ignatian contemplation — praying with a Gospel scene by entering it with your imagination: noticing the place and the people, standing there yourself, and speaking honestly with Jesus.

St. Ignatius of Loyola taught this way of prayer in his Spiritual Exercises. The Catechism describes prayer like this as engaging your thought, imagination, emotion, and desire — your whole attention, brought to Scripture.

Here is how it goes: pick a scene, read it slowly, and let four short steps walk you into it. At the end, you will write what you noticed in your journal.
