How to make the weekly Examen
Five questions, in St. Ignatius's order — the way an examination of conscience asks. Sit with each one; the answers are yours.
Give thanks. What gifts filled this week, large and small — and did I thank God for them?Look back over the week and name the gifts in it, one by one.
Ask for light.Have I asked the Holy Spirit to help me see this week as God sees it?Ask for light — to see the week honestly, and without fear.
Review the week.Where did I feel close to God this week, and where far from him — especially in the moments around my anchor words?Walk through the days one by one, and notice where your words met you.
Face what falls short.Where did I turn away this week, speak unkindly, or leave love undone — and will I tell God I am sorry and accept his mercy?Name what fell short, simply and honestly. There is mercy for all of it.
Look to the week ahead. What one small, concrete way will I live the coming week — perhaps carrying one of this week's words with me — and have I asked God for the grace to do it?Choose one small thing, and ask for the grace to do it.
